A light discovery the wellness industry cannot ignore

When most people think about light, they think about seeing.

Sunlight. Lamps. Screens. Maybe red light panels if they spend time around wellness clinics.

But certain kinds of light can do more than help you see. They can also interact with cells.

That’s the idea behind photonic therapy, also called photobiomodulation. It uses specific wavelengths of light, most often in the red and near-infrared range, because those wavelengths can pass into tissue and be absorbed by parts of the cell involved in energy production.

In simple terms, this is why people get excited about light therapy. It is not just “shining light on the body.” It is using a specific kind of light that appears to help cells respond in useful ways. The most common explanation is that the light is absorbed by a part of the mitochondria called cytochrome c oxidase, which may help the cell make more usable energy.
